Description

An iron-glazed (tetsu-yū) stoneware tea ceremony bowl by the late Kawai Takéichi.  The face holds a circular yōhen (kiln changes) accent that formed, quite incidentally, due to a confluence of chemical reactions and variations in kiln temperature.  Each time splits of wood were thrown into the kiln, another ring was formed - like those on an ancient tree.  An exceptionally rare piece.

Kawai was both nephew and student to the legendary mingei master Kawai Kanjirō and collaborated with him for over 40 years.  When he died in 1989, he left behind a modest cache of works which have never been available to the public - until now.  2000 Cranes is honored to have been given exclusive access to these very special pieces.
