Description

For over 35 years, Sawada Hiroyuki has specialized in the production of ceramic ware made especially for tea ceremony.  An avid practitioner himself, he finds particular inspiration in works from the 16th century and classical Chinese ceramics.

This striking vase is reminiscent of the type which were acquired from China and highly regarded by the Japanese nobility.  For centuries, they would grace the imperial courts in Kyoto.  It is done in a glaze called san-sai.  While in the kiln, this copper-based glaze forms a cascade of emerald green with hints of orange.

The vase is formed to present a solitary long-stemmed flower in the alcove of a tea ceremony room.  As an interior piece, however, it attracts plenty of attention all on its own.
