Description

One of the most noteworthy aspects of Suzuki Tomio's artistry is the individuality of each piece. His unique style of forming and glazing assures that no two works are ever the same.

This striking tea ceremony bowl is no exception.  It is done in Suzuki's signature kokuyosai (shimmering black) glaze.  A manganese-rich underglaze is first applied and then drip detailed with white feldspar.  The end result is an inspired piece imbued with a deep sense of strength and swirling, heated energy.

Formed entirely by hand with coils of light mogusa clay, this cylindrical (tsutsu-gata) chawan is lightweight and balanced perfectly upon a well crafted footring.  Higher walls retain the heat from whipped matcha green tea longer, thus making it better suited for winter tea events.

Suzuki Tomio's shino pottery is held in private collections around the world and, in 2011, was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for display in their East Asian Art collection.
