Description

One of the most noteworthy aspects of Suzuki Tomio's artistry is the individuality of each piece.  His unique style of forming and glazing assures that no two works are ever the same.

This striking tea ceremony bowl is no exception.  It is done in the artist's signature kokuyosai (shimmering black) glaze.  A manganese-rich underglaze is first applied and then drip detailed with aka (red) and white feldspar.  The end result is an inspired piece imbued with a deep sense of strength and swirling, heated energy.

Formed entirely by hand with coils of mogusa clay, this chawan is lightweight and balanced perfectly upon a well crafted footring.  When filled with whipped matcha, the stark contrast between the emerald green of the tea and the colors of the bowl is absolutely stunning.

Suzuki Tomio's shino pottery is held in private collections around the world and, in 2011, was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for display in their East Asian Art collection.
