Shino Tea Ceremony Bowl by Sawada Hiroyuki

Description

For over 35 years, Sawada Hiroyuki has specialized in the production of ceramic ware made especially for tea ceremony.  An avid practitioner himself, he finds particular inspiration in works from the 16th century - a time when chanoyu (tea ceremony) was reaching the apex of its development.  As a result, his own clay creations are deeply grounded in the history of Japan's tea culture and resonate with Zen aesthetics.

This tea ceremony bowl is a respectful nod to the shino wares of old.  It is glazed in a simple mixture of ground feldspar and water which, while cooling in the kiln, is transformed into a textured landscape of pinholes and crackles.

The bowl was formed entirely by hand, without the aid of a potter's wheel, in a meticulous process that negates any sense of mechanical precision.  Like many of the the artist's raku works, the bowl exudes both a reserved simplicity in the glazing and a sense of strength in its form.

When filled with whipped matcha green tea, it gains its full character and is truly a sight to behold.
