This sake cup by Kosei Tamaya is done in a copper-based glaze called shinsha-yu, or "cinnabar glaze".  As vibrant as Japan's momiji (maple) leaves in autumn, the glaze is a lustrous crimson with streams of ochre.  Iron pools at the center reflect spectral colors - like morning dew drops.

Deftly formed from a blend of clay and porcelain (hanjiki), the cup is lightweight and perfectly balanced upon a well crafted footring.  It is sure to become a sake drinker's guarded treasure.
