Over the past 20 years, Suzuki Tomio has developed a style of shino that greatly emphasizes its tactile appeal.  Lavish applications of feldspar, deep crackles and bold, energetic brushwork are the trademarks of his craft.

This attractive sake cup is done in nezumi shino, or "mouse shino", as denoted by its soft grey color.  While cooling in the kiln, pinholes and crackles form as the glaze shrinks tightly around the body of mogusa clay.  Its textured landscape promises a short exploration before every sip.

See Suzuki Tomio's Kyoto exhibition for more from his 2008 collection.
