Much of Tomio Suzuki's inspiration is drawn from both Japanese and Western classical literature, mythology and poetry - works which he says serve as his "sensei", or teacher.  And in this striking piece, we see a reference to Dante's Inferno.

The cup is done in a glaze Mr. Suzuki calls kokuyosai, or "shimmering black".  Based upon the same glazing and firing process as shino, kokuyosai possess a depth and heated energy like no other in his glazing repertoire.  Red and white feldspar drip details dance wildly around a black manganese-rich base, like fire and ice from Dante's masterpiece.

Mr. Suzuki's works are all formed on a handwheel with overlapping coils of mogusa clay.  This technique minimizes mechanical precision and assures that no two pieces are ever quite the same.

For hot or cold green tea or iced tea.

See Tomio Suzuki's Kyoto Takashimaya exhibition for more from his 2008 collection.
