Tomio Suzuki's shino works are renowned
for their provocative textures, sculpted terrains and bold brushwork.
This captivating green tea cup is done in nezumi shino, or literally "mouse shino",
as denoted by its soft grey tone. While cooling in the kiln, pinholes and
crackles form as the feldspar glaze shrinks tightly around the
clay body. Its appeal is immediately tactile, inviting you on an
exploration around the surface with your hands as a guide.
Mr. Suzuki's works are all formed on a handwheel with overlapping
coils of mogusa clay. This technique minimizes mechanical
precision and assures that no two pieces are ever quite the same.
For hot or cold green tea or iced
tea.
