Tomio Suzuki's shino creations
are renowned for their tactile richness, and this inspired murasaki shino tea
ceremony bowl epitomizes his unique approach to pottery making. While
cooling in the kiln, the thick feldspar overglaze shrinks tightly
around the clay body, forming a textured landscape of pinholes and
crackles that invites intimate exploration with eyes and hands.
The bowl is done in murasaki shino (lit. "purple shino"), an
exceedingly difficult color to master. The reddish hues
seen here form during reduction firing and only under the most precise
conditions. In fact, the humidity on any given day can change
the outcome completely. Bold bushed details on the face make up
a representation of the character shin, which means "heart" or
"spirit" - a fitting theme given the deep, blood red color of the
glaze.
The high cylindrical walls are formed with several overlapping coils
of light mogusa clay leading up to an undulating yama-michi (mountain
path) rim, and the entire piece balances perfectly upon a well crafted
footring.
A very unique and spirited piece.
