Established in Kyoto in 1831, Takashimaya Department
Store has been an active patron to the arts and crafts of Japan for well
over a century. Artists from various fields, including painting, sculpture, and ceramics, aspire
to have their works shown at the store's bijutsu-bu art gallery,
often waiting on a list for years before being granted a showing.
That's why Tomio Suzuki's most recent exhibition at Takashimaya was a
major milestone in his 15-year career as a ceramic artist. Not
only was it his first at this prestigious venue, but it coincided with
the introduction of several outstanding pieces born from his most recent
creative impulse.
Where Mr. Suzuki's works from the past have focused on provocative
glazes and highly textured surfaces, his most recent shino creations
show much more consideration towards clay landscaping. Deeply cut
ridges, sculpted terraces and facets (piano wire is often employed as a
forming tool) provide a earthen base for glazes that are softer in tone
and detailed with thoughtful, fluid brushwork.
Noticeably different from his previous showings, the Kyoto Takashimaya
exhibition was a clear indication that Mr. Suzuki has passed a marker into exciting new territory.
