Suzuki Tomio held a week-long
exhibition at the Umeda Hanshin Department Store Gallery
(Osaka), the 10th exhibition there in his nearly 16 years as a shino
artist. The exhibition was marked by the introduction of
several new yohen shino (golden shino) works - the most recent
addition to the artist's growing repertoire of shino glazes.
For those
who've been following Mr. Suzuki's work over the years, the distinct
impression that something was different was formed early at the entrance
of the gallery. Those craggy, nodular textures and energetic
blasts which marked the artist's works of old seem to have yielded to
softer, smoother, and more thoughtful surfaces. Tea ceremony bowls
with fluid, Zen-inspired brushwork. Vases with drip details
gracefully following curves and ridges. Green tea cups with
cracked wisps of feldspar.
Are we beginning to see the mellowing character of an artist as he
approaches his sixties? Perhaps. Or it may be that the
glimmer in Mr. Suzuki's "golden shino" attracts enough attention already
that provocative textures are no longer necessary. Whatever the
reason, it was clear to all that Suzuki Tomio's shino is evolving in a
bright new direction.
