Shino is one of the ceramic styles in which Sawada Hiroyuki specializes.
Its most distinctive characteristic is small pinholes in the glaze
which tea masters favor and term yuzu-hada, or citrus skin.
These elegant cups are
reminiscent of the shino wares of old, holding classical images (a
heron and figurative rice field) rendered in iron-oxide brushwork.
The incised vertical lines are formed in a technique called shinogi
and coax the yuzu-hada texture from the mostly feldspar glaze.
Because they are mostly bone white with flashes of orange, these shino
cups (yunomi) beautifully present the color and clarity of green tea.
Ideal for the tea aficionado - and partner.
