A set of distinctive stoneware sake cups (guinomi) by Tamba potter Nagai Ken.  Unglazed and unadorned, they have a natural, rustic flavor characteristic of wood-fired Tamba wares.  The intense heat inside the noborigama climbing kiln where they are fired produces gradations of rust red to dark brown, and swirling embers of red pine form a "natural glaze" (shizen-yu) which is rough yet pleasing to the touch.

Skillfully handcrafted to an exacting thinness, these lightweight guinomi resonate when tapped on the rim.  For serving sake or sencha green tea for two.

See Nagai Ken's Osaka Exhibition for more works from his 2010 collection.
