Before entering the world of ceramic making, Murata Tetsu studied the art of charcoal ink painting (called suibokuga) for several years under his father Konosuke I, a highly accomplished painter.  Today, he employs the same brush techniques to create his own distinctive style of sometsuke (cobalt glazed) porcelain wares.

The transition to ceramics was hardly an easy one.  Unlike suibokuga, where paper holds the image, the three-dimensional nature of ceramic vessels requires a keen understanding of how perspective changes according to depth and curvature.

This green tea cup set is another proud example of Murata Tetsu's masterful brushwork.  From the inside lip to the lowest depths, peonies (botan) are rendered with impeccable detail and precision, captured in the fullness of their springtime glory.
