Before entering the world of ceramic making,
Tetsu Murata studied the art of charcoal ink painting (called
suibokuga) for several years under his father Konosuke I, a highly
accomplished painter. Today, he employs the same brush
techniques to create his own distinctive style of sometsuke
(cobalt glazed) porcelain wares.
The transition to ceramics was hardly an easy one. Unlike
suibokuga, where paper holds the image, the three-dimensional nature
of ceramic vessels requires a keen understanding of how perspective
changes according to depth and curvature.
This green tea cup set is a proud example of Tetsu Murata's masterful
brushwork. From the inside lip to the lowest depths, a charming
panorama is held in perspective, showing a seascape and stills of
temple life from ages past. The arabesque pattern outside (aka
karasuka) contrasts beautifully with the microcosm held within.
The ideal gift for any couple who appreciates green tea.
