Before entering the world of
ceramic making, Tetsu Murata studied the art of charcoal ink painting
(called suibokuga) for several years under his father Konosuke I, a
highly accomplished painter. Today, he employs the same brush
techniques to create his own distinctive style of sometsuke (cobalt
glazed) porcelain wares.
This green tea cup set is a proud example of Tetsu Murata's masterful
brushwork. Vignettes of mountainside and seascapes are framed by
floral and geometric patterns which have been rendered on Kyo-yaki
(Kyoto ware) since the Edo era.
The set is called meioto (his and hers), where one cup is
formed slightly taller than the other. It makes the ideal gift for any couple
who appreciates green tea.
