Before entering the world of
ceramic making, Murata Tetsu studied the art of charcoal ink painting
(called suibokuga) for several years under his father Konosuke I, a
highly accomplished painter. Today, he employs the same brush
techniques to create his own distinctive style of sometsuke (cobalt
glazed) porcelain wares.
This green tea cup set is a proud example of Murata Tetsu's masterful
brushwork. Vignettes of mountainside and seascapes are framed by
floral and geometric patterns which have been rendered on Kyo-yaki
(Kyoto ware) since the Edo era.
