Before entering the world of ceramic making, Tetsu Murata studied the art of charcoal ink painting (called suibokuga) for several years under his father Konosuke I, a highly accomplished painter. Today, he employs the same brush techniques to create his own distinctive style of sometsuke (cobalt glazed) porcelain wares.

This green tea cup set is a proud example of Tetsu Murata's masterful brushwork.  Around the rim, a panorama of mountainside and seascapes is skillfully rendered and set upon geometric and floral patterns which have been painted on Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware) since the Edo era.
