Karatsu is a style of high-fired pottery which originated in Japan's Kyushu region in the 15th and 16th century.  It is denoted by iron brushed images under a translucent glaze - "pictures" called é in Japanese.  With the introduction and proliferation of porcelain in 17th century in the same area, karatsu suffered a long decline but has recently undergone a revival among pottery enthusiasts who appreciate its warmth and simplicity.

Wada Hiroaki helps keep the tradition alive with the introduction of these charming é garatsu green tea cups.  They are wood fired at
Oizumi-gama and enrobed with all the rustic charm of Karatsu wares of old.  Zen circles, or enso, are rendered in iron brushwork on the face.

See Wada Hiroaki's Osaka group exhibition pictorial for more works.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by the artist.  Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
