Wada Hiroaki works between two
ends of the ceramic-making spectrum. On one end is the precise,
refined world of Kyoyaki porcelain. On the other, the
untamed world of wood-fired pottery. And, at times, he's able to
meld the two disciplines and introduce pieces which share qualities of
both - like this striking iron glazed (tetsu-yu) beer glass.
It was fired at
Oizumi-gama
in a saggar which protected it from waves of flying embers inside the
wood-burning kiln. In a more stable temperature, the glaze
formed evenly around the sandy clay body, leaving traces of metallic
flecks over a deep, lustrous burgundy. It is sure to become a
beer lover's cherished vessel.
Best when chilled before use.
