This vase by Wada Tozan is wood fired at Oizumi-gama in the haikaburi (lit. "ash covered") technique.  It was placed around the ash pit of the kiln and, at a temperature of 1,250°C (2,300°F), blasted with successive waves of red pine and cedar embers, each one adding another layer of texture and color.  The fired side of the vase is a textured collage of ochre speckles and embers now frozen in time.  The rear, in contrast, retains the soft quality of the ash slip.

What rose from the ashes is a piece imbued with both the raw, unrefined dynamics of kiln dynamics and the quiet austerity of the Zen aesthetic.  For ikebana arrangements or as a decorative centerpiece.

See Wada Hiroaki & Wada Tozan's Daimaru Gallery Exhibition pictorial for works from their recent collections.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by the artist.  Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
