This striking beer glass by Wada Hiroaki was fired in the haikaburi
(ash covered)
technique at
Oizumi-gama. It was placed right in front of the flue - the ventilation window
which joins both chambers of the kiln and the area where heat and pressure are
highest. At a temperature of 1,250°C (2,300°F), the
clay body became a molten,
quivering mass, nearly collapsing in upon itself. Luckily, it
survived the grueling process and was born from the kiln with a gently
undulating form.
During firing, swirling embers
of red pine fused with the kohiki clay slip, forming amber colored patches on
the side facing the flames. Full of warmth and unique character, it is sure to become
a beer drinker's favorite.
Best when chilled before use.
