Haikaburi, or "ash covered", is a firing technique where pots are put in and around the stoking area of the kiln.  As more wood is thrown in and burned, ash builds up around the piece.  Pots that manage to survive this grueling process (the failure rate is well over 70 percent) exhibit an unrefined energy rarely seen in other types of ceramics.

This green tea cup by Wada Hiroaki was fired in the haikaburi technique at Oizumi-gama - the Wada family's two-chambered noborigama climbing kiln.  During firing, swirling embers of red pine fused with the clay slip, forming amber colored patches on the side facing the flames.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by the artist.  Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.

See Wada Hiroaki & Wada Tozan's Daimaru Gallery Exhibition pictorial for works from their 2006 collection.
