Haikaburi, or "ash covered", is a
firing technique where pots are put in and around the stoking area of
the kiln. As more wood is thrown in and burned, ash builds up
around the piece, fusing with the clay and forming a myriad of
textures and colors. Pots that manage to survive this grueling
process (the failure rate is well over 70 percent) exhibit a raw
energy rarely found in other types of ceramics.
These striking green tea cups by Hiroaki Wada are glazed in a light
kohiki ash slip and wood-fired at
Oizumi-gama.
They were born from the kiln imbued with both the pastel softness of kohiki and the
unrefined roughness of haikaburi. The duality in their character lends them an
energy that is eternal.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by
the artist. Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
