Hiroaki Wada has trained for the
past 13 years under his father, Tozan Wada, at the family-owned kiln
in Hyogo prefecture. Much like his mentor, he excels in Kyoyaki
(Kyoto ware) enamel overglazed pottery and porcelain. In 2002,
his art entered an exciting new phase with the christening of
Oizumi-gama
- a wood burning noborigama climbing kiln located far away in
Yamanashi Prefecture. Three or four times a year, the father and
son team makes the long trip
there for week-long firings, and many of the works they produce at
Oizumi-gama follow in the Shigaraki style of unglazed pottery.
This inspired vase is the product of their most recent collaboration.
It was formed by Hiroaki Wada in a style called uzukumaru, or
"crouching style", as denoted by its crooked neck and undulating lip. At 1,250°C (2,300°F) degrees,
embers of red pine swirling around the inside of the kiln fused with
the clay body, forming a natural ash glaze buildup around the
shoulders. The body is speckled with the same amber markings and
hi-iro (fire color) gradations of orange and brown.
Possessing all the warmth and rustic charm of Shigaraki pottery, this
vase attracts just as much admiration by itself as it does with a
flower arrangement held inside.
A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by
the artist. Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
