Hiroaki Wada has trained for the
past 13 years under his father, Tozan Wada, at the family-owned kiln
in Hyogo prefecture. Much like his mentor, he excels in Kyoyaki
(Kyoto ware) enamel overglazed pottery and porcelain. In 2002,
both father and son opened a new chapter in the history of the kiln
with the christening of
Oizumi-gama
- a wood burning noborigama (climbing kiln) located far away in
Yamanashi Prefecture. Three or four times a year, they make the long trip
there for week-long firings.
This inspired vase is the product of their most recent collaboration.
It was formed by Hiroaki Wada and overglazed with a paste made of rice
husks and water. At 1,250°C (2,300°F) degrees, the husks fused
with the clay body, forming a textured landscape accented with flashes
of green and amber. It has immediate appeal to our tactile sense
and rarely goes untouched.
This piece is tall enough to accommodate arrangements with long
stemmed flowers and small branches.
See Hiroaki Wada & Tozan Wada's
Daimaru Gallery Exhibition pictorial
