This boat shaped flower basin by
Hiroaki Wada is used to hold ikebana standing arrangements. It
is a marvelous display of the kind of dynamic effects he can achieve with
the haikaburi ("ash covered") technique. The
side nearest the stoking chamber of the kiln is accented with a range
of yohen (kiln changes) color variations and textures; the opposite
side is a soothing milky blue. Inside the vessel, a pool of
emerald green has formed where pine ash has vitrified, and the front end of retains a buildup of embers.
Full of raw, unrefined
kiln energy, this flower basin promises new discoveries each time it is
displayed.
