Yakishime is a general
term used to describe high-fired, unglazed stoneware. In the
absence of any decorative elements, the vessel's form and how the clay
is transformed inside the kiln are the two points upon which aesthetic
evaluations are made.
This stunning kashiki (sweets bowl) is fired in a saggar packed with
rice husks from last season's harvest. The husks are packed in
layers at different densities. As the ash burns, heat
variations form subtle gradations upon the unglazed clay.
