A sake vessel set by Tozan Wada and his son Hiroaki Wada. Fired in a noborigama
climbing kiln, it is a stunning display of the kind of dynamic effects
that only wood-fired pottery can exhibit.
Both pieces are glazed in a kohiki ash slip and fired in the
haikaburi ("ash covered") technique. Their
relative positions inside the
kiln, however, has yielded dramatically different results. The
flask by the younger Wada holds lighter hues of amber, pink and grey.
The cup by Tozan Wada is a dark ochre peppered with burst of feldspar
crystals. Different yet complimentary, both pieces in this unique set promise
hours of contemplation and discovery.
