Yakishime is a term
used to describe high-fired, unglazed stoneware. In the absence
of any decorative elements, the vessel's form and how the clay is
changed in the kiln are the two points upon which aesthetic
evaluations are made. While form is well within the artist's
control, what the kiln gives back is not.
This stoneware incense burner by
Hiroaki Wada is imbued with the essence of yakishime. It is
meticulously hand crafted with a fine-grained clay and fired in a saggar (clay cylinder) packed with
rice husks - lightly at the top and more densely at the bottom. As the husks burn at varying intensities,
subtle gradations form as the clay is permanently changed by the heat
of the kiln.
For cone, stick, or powdered incense.
