Yakishime is a term used to describe high-fired unglazed stoneware.  These kobachi (lit. "small bowls") are fired in saggars packed with rice husks.  The husks are packed lightly at the top and more densely at the bottom.  As they burn at varying intensities, a distinctive gradation is formed on the surface of the unglazed Shiga clay.
