This stoneware tea ceremony bowl by Kawai Toru is
done in a glaze called kairagi. During firing, the glaze shrinks
tightly around the clay body, forming copious beads and bumps - a
textural marvel.
Kawai Toru is the grandnephew of Kawai Kanjiro
and the last to study under the legendary master. Over the
years, he has refined his own particular style of pottery - one
that emphasizes clean lines and complex geometric forms. Upwardly twisting facets
(mentori), swirling vortexes, and flared rims are the trademarks of his craft and show a
level of technical skill unseen in the works of former mingei masters.
The bowl comes with a signed wooden
presentation box (ki-bako) made to order.
Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.

See Kawai Toru's
exhibition catalogue for more works from previous collections.
