Through constant experimentation, Kamada Kōji has
elevated tenmoku, a technique originating in China during the Song
dynasty, to an even higher level of refinement with the introduction
of several signature glazes, each one adding another facet to the
diversity of his art.
This gourd shaped vase is done in two variations of the artist's
signature ginsho tenmoku glaze. Together they give the
piece a contemporary, dichromatic quality: a feathered, silvery
blue on the upper bulb and a matte grey with hints of brown on the
lower. Golden highlights around the rim and low-relief lines add
a sense of refined luxury.
The ideal centerpiece for any Japanese-inspired interior or modern
decor.
Kamada Kōji's tenmoku works are held in private
collections around the world and, in 2005, were acquired by New
York's Metropolitan Museum of Art for display in their Asian Art collection.
See his
Osaka Exhibition for more works from his 2011 exhibition.
