Many of the tenmoku tea bowls brought to Japan in the 12th century from China were done in a lustrous black glaze with streams of rust red running toward their center.  Tenmoku specialist Kamada Kōji introduces his own energized rendition of these ancient vessels with this stunning katsu yuteki sake cup.  The glaze is mostly wood ash heavily saturated with iron oxide.  While in the kiln, the iron content pools on the surface in uniform streams - a mesmerizing effect that invites you to ponder the mystery of its creation.

Deftly formed at a 45 degree angle from its footring, this guinomi has a sharp, clean demeanor.  A unique addition to any saké vessel collection.

See Kamada Kōji's 40th Year Commemorative Exhibition for more works from his 2008 collection.
