Slight refinements lead many
artists on new tangents, and this striking tea ceremony bowl by Koji
Kamada is the product of his latest creative impulse. It is done
in a new rendition of his signature ginsho tenmoku glaze.
While cooling in the kiln, wood ash forms an intricate web uniformly
across a soft, silvery layer of iron oxide - a breathtaking effect
that is otherworldly, enhanced even more so by the golden halo around
the rim where the glaze is thinnest. It is an
outstanding example of the kind of yohen (kiln changes) effects
that have become the trademark of Mr. Kamada's tenmoku artistry.
The body is deftly formed to an exacting thinness and perfectly
balanced. Its wide brim allows whipped green tea to cool more rapidly,
thus making this chawan more suited for serving matcha in the summer
season.

See Koji Kamada's
40th Year Commemorative Exhibition for more works from his 2008 collection.
