Through years of experimentation and refinement, Koji Kamada has produced a number of
outstanding glazes, each adding another facet to the breadth and
brilliance of his tenmoku artistry.
This handsome tea ceremony bowl (chawan) is done in his signature
shikou tenmoku. Intense heat within the kiln serves as the
catalyst for a complex reaction between wood ash and the minerals in
the clay. The end result is a lustrous, feathered glaze with
blended hues of bronze and crimson, called shikou in Japanese.
When filled with the vivid green of whipped matcha tea, the bowl gains
its full character and is a sight to behold.
This chawan exudes a sense of reserved strength and stability.
It is deftly formed in the han-tsutsu (half cylinder) shape and
rests solidly on a wide footring. Its high walls retain heat
longer, thus making it more suitable for winter tea ceremonies.

See Koji Kamada's
40th Year Commemorative Exhibition for more works from his 2008 collection.
