Many of the Song era tenmoku tea bowls introduced to Japan in the 12th century were done in a lustrous black glaze with streams of rust red running toward their center.  Tenmoku specialist Koji Kamada introduces his own energized rendition of these ancient vessels with this stunning katsu yuteki sake cup.  The glaze is mostly wood ash heavily saturated with iron oxide.  While in the kiln, the iron content pools on the surface in uniform spots - a mesmerizing effect that invites you to ponder the mystery of its creation.

Deftly formed at a 45 degree angle from its footring, this guinomi has a sharp, clean demeanor.  A unique addition to any sake vessel collection.

See Koji Kamada's Takashimaya Exhibition Pictorial for more from his 2007 collection.
