Ikai Yuichi's creative inspiration is derived from nature, and many of the ash glazing techniques in which he excels have some reference to textures found in the natural world.  This eye-catching sake cup (guinomi) is done in a glaze called kawa-kujira.  While cooling in the kiln, the glaze shrinks disproportionately faster around the clay body, forming copious beads and bumps.  The effect resembles the quality of whale (kujira) skin.

A unique gift for any sake aficionado.
