Ikai Yuichi's creative inspiration is derived from
nature, and many of the ash glazing techniques in which he excels have
some reference to textures found in the natural world. This green tea cup set is done in a glaze called kairagi. While
cooling in the kiln, the glaze shrinks disproportionately faster
around the clay body, forming into bumps and crackles. Accented
with iron brushed details, the cups become a figurative representation
of the bark on two plum (kai) trees.
The set is called meioto (his & hers), with one cup formed
slightly taller than the other. For hot or cold green tea or
iced tea enjoyed, of course, together.
