Also included in Ikai Yuichi's diverse glazing repertoire is celadon.  Called seiji in Japanese, the glaze is characterized by overlapping layers and fine cracks beneath a glassy surface.  In order for these details to develop sufficiently, the most exacting conditions have to be met.  A uniform thickness is essential, so most ceramists use a sprayer to apply the glaze.  Shunning any sort of mechanization in his craft, Mr. Ikai chooses the much more difficult path of dipping his celadon pots, and that puts him in territory that few Japanese potters dare to enter.

This beautiful sake decanted is a testament to Ikai Yuichi's devotion to the seiji technique.  An intricate mosaic of cracks is illuminated from behind by a powdery blue.  The glaze drips down just enough to reveal the rich brown clay underneath - a contrast between earth and sky that is quite sublime.

Sure to become the guarded treasure of any sake aficionado.

See Ikai Yuichi's Takashimaya Gallery exhibition for more works from his 2009 collection.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by the artist.  Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
