In this tea ceremony bowl (chawan) by Ikai Yuichi, we can see the influence of his mentor, the late Uichi
Shimizu (1926-2004), whose exemplary work in iron and ash glazes
garnered him the title of Living National Treasure in 1985.
It is done in Mr. Ikai's signature hakuryu, or "fluid white",
which is a simple glaze made from rice straw ash applied over an
iron-rich slip. During firing, gravity guides the molten ash
toward the center of the bowl to reveal the darker underlayer. The end result is an
icy panorama of some distant, snow covered mountain. When filled
with the verdant color of whipped matcha green tea, the wintery
microcosm is quite refreshing.
The footring area around this chawan shows the grainy quality of the
clay from which it was formed. Its wide brim allows tea to cool
more rapidly, thus making this piece more suited to serving matcha in
the summer season.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by
the artist. Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
