Also included in Yuichi Ikai's
diverse glazing repertoire is celadon. Called seiji in
Japanese, the glaze is characterized by overlapping layers and fine
cracks beneath a glassy surface. In order for these details to develop
sufficiently, the most exacting conditions have to be met. A
uniform thickness is essential, so most ceramists use a sprayer to
apply the glaze. Shunning any sort of mechanization in his
craft, Mr. Ikai chooses the much more difficult path of dipping his
celadon pots, and that puts him in territory that few Japanese potters
dare to enter.
This elegant vase is a testament to Yuichi Ikai's devotion to
the seiji technique. An intricate mosaic of translucent,
overlapping layers is illuminated from behind by a powdery blue.
The body is skillfully formed from a rich brown clay, and its tall,
geometric stature makes an interesting flask in which to display one
long-stemmed flower.
The ideal centerpiece for any table.

A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by
