Also included in Yuichi Ikai's
diverse glazing repertoire is celadon. Called seiji in
Japanese, it is characterized by overlapping layers and fine cracks
that form beneath the glassy surface while cooling in the kiln.
Mr. Ikai captures the colors of the sky in this lovely set
of celadon glasses. An intricate mosaic of fine
cracks is illuminated from behind by a powdery blue, while a shade of
grey yohen (kiln changes) floats gently across one side. Both are
skillfully hand thrown on a potter's wheel and have a slight undulating
quality.
For green tea (hot or cold),
beer, or any beverage of choice.
